He, Nakkheeran Gopal was born on 10-4-59 at Aruppukottai, Virudhunagar District. His father Mr.S.Ramanathan who was working as a lower grade employee in Highways Department, has got retired recently. His mother name is Rajamanickammal and he has got two sisters, One brother.
After completing fifth standard at Aruppukottai Municipal School he joined in S.B.K. Higher Secondary School, Where he finished Eleventh Standard. Then he finished P.U.C., B.Com., Subsequently at Devankar, and S.B.K. College. During his academic period he showed great interest at art works and Hockey.
During 1977-78 he joined a rice shop after completing his graduation, as he doesn’t want to be idle. But his father was not interested in his doing the job. they wanted him to become atleast a clerk in a bank as he has got B.Com degree. he believed firmly that all the B.Com graduates are not getting Bank Job.
During that period one of his family friends from Chennai invited him to follow them to seek a job at Chennai. he oblidged to that and came to Chennai by 1978-79. Unfortunately he couldn’t get a job as he was promised. Then he started searching for suitable job according to his qualification and his taste. he used to visit each and every company daily.
he was called for an interview at Butterfly company Head Qtrs., situated at Vannarpet. He attented the interview, neatly dressed with shoes and tie. After completing the interview he was taken to the factory. he was introduced to a man in dirty working cloth, they assigned him the job of cleaning the material used for making Tumbler. he was very much disappointed with the situation. The same day evening a Benz car came to the factory. The man assigned the job for me got into the car and went away. Then only he realized that that person is the owner of the firm. Sincerity and dedication in the profession will only fetch victory, he believed.
After working there for a year he started a rubber company with three thousand rupees investment with the support of a friend. They had to work for at least 20 hours daily. They went around all the places only by cycles. They didn’t get much returns from the business. They were able to afford only one time food, that too set-Dosai, the Cheapest among all items. During this period he suffered from sinus and piles. As a result of this, he returned to his native place.
After taking treatment for his diseases he had to take rest for three months. He utilized the period for improving his art work talents. Many people suggested him to search for a job the field of Journalism, after seeing his work. Again he came to Chennai and started searching for relevant job.
Mr. Valampurijohn was the Editor of “THAI” Magazine run by the then Chief Minister M.G.R. At that time about 14 people have left “THAI”. The “THAI” Management was in need of new entrants. Mr Valampurijohn a man with the character of encouraging young people, has appointed him after seeing my works. There only he learned many things about Layout.
After “THAI” he joined in “Thiraichuvai” started by Shyam, Robin, Balaganesan. There he learned many things related with magazine production.
Later he worked as a Lay-out Director in Tharasu Magazine. The wrapper Lay-out created by me attracted many readers. he has got enough experience in handling sensational and adventures news. Further he learned the secret behind the success of upcoming Magazine.
Due to various misunderstanding he had to leave “THARASU” For the sake of supporting the people who were all trusting him, I also had to start a magazine of my own. Political personality Mr.K.Subbu was in possession of ‘Nakkheeran’ title. He thought of approaching them to get the title. But he was told by others that their expectations were high. Contrary to this, Mr.Subbu generously offered the title to us. Though we got the title we had only Rs.4000 with us to proceed further. Trusting on my sincere work, the material suppliers have offered credit for 4-10 weeks.
Nakkheeran started its functions from No.1, Mandapam Road, Kilpauk, in a 10 x 10″ small room, situated on the banks of the Coovam river. The first issue came out on 20th of April 88. Mr.Sivaji Ganesan, who started his own party at that time, wrote in Nakkheeran titled as “Neenkal Athanaiperum Uthamanthana sollungal”
With the support of sincere, hardworking and dedicated team, we started publishing sensational investigative news items. During “89 Assembly election, opinion poll survey has been conducted by us. As the election results were announced, people were thrilled to see Nakkheeran results are 90% correct.
In 1997, he was felicitated with Justice Krishna Iyer Award and Jaycies “One of ten outstanding Indian award. In the beginning of this year (2005) India Today Magazine has selected him as one among the influential popular 25 persons in TamilNadu.
With the whole-hearted support of the readers, Nakkheeran circulation went upto 1,33,000 issues within a year. Then we switched over to the present premises.
Not alone in the editorial and administration, but also in the agency network, we have got young people only. Agents have been offereing us a very good support in all possible ways.
With the staunch support being extended by the readers to Nakkheeran which is raising voice against social evils, is coming out as Bi-weekly with a total circulation of over five lakhs now.
